RFID based technology to allow a better follow up of students school activity

In Belgium the ministry of education has adapted the way students, of technical oriented schools, are evaluated. In fact students are getting more autonomy on when they spend time on a specific course. Courses are split into fix "teaching in a classroom" and flex "working on a course as part of a project" times. Therefore there is a need for technology that underpins this new approach providing the following features:

  • School gate control based on the students badge taking into acount official holidays, weekends, school days, custom holidays and time periods
  • Sound and OLED indication of badging-IN, badging-OUT or DENIED state
  • Overview of who is currently at the school and an historical overview of absences
  • Badging system at fixed classrooms where the technical material/machinery/tools are available
  • Badging system in "open" classes where a student can decide on what course he will spend his time as part of a project, here we use a TFT screen allowing course selection
  • Ability to evaluate where the student is and working on what course

We implemented IoT boards with RFID readers at the school gate with open/close steering of the gate and a generic badging node at the secretariat. For the student courses timings we implemented IoT boards with a TFT screen connected so that, based on the student classgroup, courses show up for selection. The fixed classrooms have IoT boards without a TFT since only one course can be teached in there. All this data is send to our cloud based application server where we offer different functionalities as shown below.
